For most everyday dirt and sweat, modern detergents clean very effectively in cold or warm water. Hot water is most useful for: Heavy stains, oil/grease, sanitizing after illness, very sweaty gym gear with odor buildup. Second, hot water can have some unintended side effects. Hot water can cause additional shrinkage, even on pre-shrunk fabric. Printed graphics and inks tend to last longer with cooler washes. Polyester performance fibers can wear down faster with repeated high heat. Colors fade more quickly in hot water. Also, cold water is more energy efficient. The choice is yours!
